Description: Hartness House Inn

Nestled between the foothills of Southern Vermont's Green Mountains and the Connecticut River, the Hartness House is a wonderfully unique property. A National Landmark, the Hartness House was built in 1904 by former Vermont Governor, inventor, astronomer, and the wealthiest man in the state at the time, James Hartness. Come be a guest in this beautifully elegant turn-of-the-century 32-acre country estate, enjoy romance and intrigue of an historic observatory, the warmth and comfort of fine Vermont hospitality and much more. Unique to Hartness House is its historic observatory. The 600-power Turret Equatorial Telescope was built in 1910, and was one of the first tracking telescopes in America. Our guests can tour the 240-foot underground tunnel and Stellafane Museum where Hartness did his inventing. For fun and exercise, the Hartness House has an outdoor pool and it's own network of nature trails. A little further afield, you can enjoy hiking or challenge the slopes of some Vermont's finest ski areas. Okemo, Bromley, Ascutney and Killington ski areas are all within a 45 minute drive.
